A first article inspection (FAI) is a formal verification process where the first production part is measured against the engineering drawing. Every dimension, tolerance, and specification is checked and documented to confirm the manufacturing process can produce conforming parts.

FAI is typically required on the first production run of a new part, after any design change, after a process change, after a long production gap (usually 2+ years), or when a new supplier is qualified. Aerospace and defense contracts (AS9102) almost always require formal FAI documentation.
